I have seen an
alarming trend in our churches lately. It seems like there are many people
that want to help when the job is big with lots of recognition, but if the
job is small and not necessarily noticed by others, it is hard to find
help with those things. Through the
years, my family and I have been involved in many aspects of ministry. Our
first opportunity to serve the Lord in any type of activity was when we
volunteered to do the yard work for our local church. We would go every Saturday and
spend hours on end cutting, clipping, raking, sweeping, edging and
everything else you can imagine. At the end of the day, we would be tired
but very pleased with the results and the way that we knew people would
view God's house when they came the next morning. Later, we were given the opportunity to make the same
difference inside the church when the person who was responsible for the
cleaning had left. Again, we would spend hours cleaning and scrubbing to
make sure that when people came into the building, God was glorified by
the atmosphere that others were able to experience in His house. At the
time, we performed these tasks without thought to what they might mean to
others. We were just honored to do something that was a help to the
kingdom of God and a blessing to our Father. It is since we have had the
opportunity to pastor, that we realize what a blessing that workers like
that also are to the pastor. There are no "big" ministries and "small"
ministries in God's eyes. Everything that we do for His glory is big in
His eyes. I encourage you, if you want to be a part of the ministry in
your local church, don't wait to volunteer for the big things but instead
pick up the broom, wash the dishes, change the trash, clean the toilets. .
. Not only will you be blessed but you will also be a blessing, not only
to your pastor, but also to your Lord.
